Question by Me in TN: Have you ever filed bankrupty using a bankruptcy kit, or now someone who has?
I know they have bankruptcy kits. To me, I’d be afraid I wouldn’t do everything right. How hard are they to use? I know it’s a lot cheaper then getting a lawyer, but is it really better?

Well, I can tell you from my personal experience as a Legal Assistant with a bankruptcy law firm that I have prepared literally hundreds of clients’ bankruptcies (under the direction of the attorneys). I am really pretty good at it. But even so, if I had to file bankruptcy myself, I would never consider doing it myself without an attorney. Perhaps I’ve seen too much of what CAN go wrong. And even after having prepared many hundreds of bankruptcies, I still learn something new from almost every one of them.
I can also tell you that bankruptcy attorneys regularly get clients who come in after having royally messed up their own bankruptcy cases (trying to do it without a lawyer). Sometimes a bankruptcy attorney can help them at that point, but sometimes it is too late. And if you have to hire a bankruptcy attorney after the fact to untangle a bankruptcy case that you’ve already bungled, its going to cost you a LOT more than it would have cost just to hire an attorney in the first place.
